March is Women’s History Month, intended to highlight the historic and contemporary contributions of women to society. At Jet Wine Bar, we are celebrating in our favorite way… with wine! Starting on International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8th, we’ll feature six wines made by female winemakers. The United Nations annually makes an official theme for IWD, which this year is #BeBoldForChange.

While this is one glass ceiling that was cracked long ago, female winemakers remain in the minority. We honor their boldness in the pursuit of winemaking-happiness and we are happy to highlight these fantastic winemakers.

So, who are they?

Meredith Smith is the winemaker for Idaho winery, Sawtooth. She started at the winery as a “harvest helper” in 2009, and now crafts their esteemed wines. Skyline Red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah, and Malbec, resulting in currant, eucalyptus, black cherries, and plum!

Marion Pral (now Chatelus) makes wine at the eponymous Domaine Marion Pral. Her wines are well-known and well-loved and feature in many a menu’s Beaujolais offerings. Her Beaujolais Blanc is an excellent expression of Beaujolais Chardonnay – a light, nutty, smooth, and stone-fruity organic wine.

Susana Balbo is Argentina’s doyenne of winemaking and was the country’s first international consultant. She now runs 4 labels, including her namesake, “Susana Balbo”, and Crios. The Crios Rose of Malbec is fuller-bodied and flamboyant, with bright-red cherries and strawberries.

Elena Jimenez and Marta Casas are sisters-in-law and winemakers at Parés Balta winery in the Penedes. Pares Balta is in the heart of Cava country, and this Cava has all the hallmarks of a traditional Brut, with a clean, fruity finish.

Elena Brooks is one of our favorite winemakers from “down under”.  This Aussie star produces wines at her Dandelion Vineyards in the McLaren Vale. “Menagerie of the Barossa” is her GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mataro), and it is bold and bit beastly, but with a soupcon of rose petals and lavender.

Aurelie Giraudon makes the wine for this family winery, Marcel Giraudon. Located in Chitry – think high-value Chablis – this killer Bourgogne Aligoté has a clean and crisp mouth of lime, mineral, pear, and apple.
