Wine Tasting: Twain’s Innocents Abroad

Travels with Twain!

in 1867 Mark Twain traveled by ship, with a motely group of Americans, around Europe and the Middle East.  His impressions of the months-long journey to famous and historic places first appeared in newspaper columns, and were immortalized in his travelogue, Innocents Abroad – one of the best-selling travel books of all time.

We’ll travel along with Twain and his companions, making some of the same stops they did and drinking the local wine.

Want to read along? The complete book is available, free of charge, from Project Gutenberg: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/3176

Wine Tasting: Field Blends!

Grown Together, Harvested Together, Fermented Together

Field blends aren’t just ordinary blends of multiple grapes; they are made from multiple grape varieties grown in the same vineyard, harvested and fermented together!

This technique has a long history in both the Old and New Worlds. Fields might be planted deliberately with mixed grapes – to see which thrive, to mix comlementary characteristics, or simply for diversification. Or, they might have been mistakenly mixed. By whatever way, field-blend wines can be delightful drinks that are far more than just the sum of their parts.

We’ll taste wines from Vienna – where the technique is tradional – and also from Pennsylvania – where it is not. We’ll also taste field blends and co-fermentations from Alsace, California, and Spain.

What are we drinking?

  • Weingut Wieninger, Wiener Gemischter Satz (2017)
  • Agathe Bursin, L’As de B (2016)
  • Va La Zafferano (2016)
  • Marc Isart La Maldicion (2015)

Wine Tasting: Game of Thrones

Winter is coming to Westeros… fortunately we have wine

The Arbor may be known for the best wine, as befits the home of the Redwyne and their grape-cluster sigil, but it might be tough to procure this time of year.  So we’ve sourced the best bottles from Westeros and Essos, from the real locations across the known world.

We’ll toast to the new fate of the Unsullied with wine from the seat of Astapor, and drink the sea air of Dragonstone. We’ll taste of the flowery fields around Highgarden, and find out what Lady Olenna actually served in the garden with lemon cakes. We’ve also done some digging of our own, and introduce you to the sigil of the 3 fishes…

We’ll taste:

  • Agerre, Getariako Txakolina (2018)
  • Vina Skaramuca Plavac Mali Croatia (2016)
  • Alain Graillot, Zenata Syrah Syrocco Thalvin (2016)
  • Marenas Viñedo & Bodega, Córdoba Cerro Encinas (2016)

Sex and Wine: Powerful, Sultry, and Smooth

How do *you* talk about wine? Do you think of wine as “male” or “female”? Androgynous? Trans? Sex-based, gendered adjectives like “muscular”, “pretty”, and “buxom” are frequently used to describe wines. But why? How do *you* refer to wine? Is it static? Or fluid?

We’ll taste wines all along the gender spectrum, and talk about their traits.

  • Pajot, Côtes de Gascogne Quatre Cepages (2018)
  • Tenuta la Piccola Malvasia Secca (2017)
  • Castello di Verduno, Verduno Pelaverga Basadone (2017)
  • Pares Balta Garnatxa Indigena (2015)
  • Decibel, Malbec Hawke’s Bay (2016)

Join us for this fun and spirited evening of wine and conversation about sex and gender in wine. Look out for our special-guest host, Queen Miss Karen VonSay!

Let’s talk about sex, baby!

Price $50

These wines will also be available at the bar.

Wine Tasting: Adventures of Odysseus

Odysseus’ Journey

Favored by Athena and friend of Achilles, Odysseus helped gain victory in the Trojan War. But instead of immediate fame and fortune, he battled monsters (and the wrath of the Gods) on a ten year journey to return home to Ithaka. Along the way he battled the Cyclops, encountered Sirens, escaped cannibals, lived with the nymph Calypso, and ate and drank his way around the Mediterranean.

We’ll explore with him, also drinking our way around the Mediterranean!

We’ll taste:

  • Robola Cooperative Robola Of Cephalonia PDO (2018)
  • Domaine Maestracci E Prove Blanc Corsica (2015)

Wine Tasting: Charles Darwin 2

This Date is Sold Out. Contact info@jetwinebar.com to be added to the wait list

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CHARLES DARWIN!

Let’s celebrate with a wine tasting.

Join us for a wine tasting in honor of Charles Darwin, scientist extraordinaire. We’ll follow his journey on the HMS Beagle, in which his observations on plants, animals, rocks, and people proved indispensable to his views on natural selection and evolutionary theory.

The Beagle, with Darwin aboard, predominantly traveled along the coast of South America – and famously to the Galapagos Islands – but also made stops in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and the Canary Islands.
