Local Flavor: Foraged Foods, Local Wines

It’s a local extravaganza!

Join us for a pairing of foods locally-foraged by Heather McMonnies of Food Hedge, and wines from nearby PA and NJ wineries, selected by Jill Weber, Jet’s owner and Wining Archaeologist.

Jill and Heather will lead this seated tasting in Jet’s lounge. We’ll have 5 wines from wineries within 100 miles of Philly, paired with small plates prepared from foods found in nearby fields and forests. The menu will be executed by Chef Justin Swain of our neighbor, Rex 1516. Learn about foraging, and the food and wine in your backyard!

Sex and Wine: Powerful, Sultry, and Smooth

How do *you* talk about wine? Do you think of wine as “male” or “female”? Androgynous? Trans? Sex-based, gendered adjectives like “muscular”, “pretty”, and “buxom” are frequently used to describe wines. But why? How do *you* refer to wine? Is it static? Or fluid?

We’ll taste wines all along the gender spectrum, and talk about their traits.

  • Pajot, Côtes de Gascogne Quatre Cepages (2018)
  • Tenuta la Piccola Malvasia Secca (2017)
  • Castello di Verduno, Verduno Pelaverga Basadone (2017)
  • Pares Balta Garnatxa Indigena (2015)
  • Decibel, Malbec Hawke’s Bay (2016)

Join us for this fun and spirited evening of wine and conversation about sex and gender in wine. Look out for our special-guest host, Queen Miss Karen VonSay!

Let’s talk about sex, baby!

Price $50

These wines will also be available at the bar.

Wine Tasting: Adventures of Odysseus

Odysseus’ Journey

Favored by Athena and friend of Achilles, Odysseus helped gain victory in the Trojan War. But instead of immediate fame and fortune, he battled monsters (and the wrath of the Gods) on a ten year journey to return home to Ithaka. Along the way he battled the Cyclops, encountered Sirens, escaped cannibals, lived with the nymph Calypso, and ate and drank his way around the Mediterranean.

We’ll explore with him, also drinking our way around the Mediterranean!

We’ll taste:

  • Robola Cooperative Robola Of Cephalonia PDO (2018)
  • Domaine Maestracci E Prove Blanc Corsica (2015)
  • Pietro Caciorgna Nerello Mascalese Ciauri’A Etna Rosso Sicily (2017)
  • Librandi Duca San Felice Ciro Rosso Classico Superiore Riserva DOC Calabria (2014)
  • Pasaeli Karasakiz 6N Aegean (2017)

Wine Tasting: Charles Darwin 2

This Date is Sold Out. Contact info@jetwinebar.com to be added to the wait list

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CHARLES DARWIN!

Let’s celebrate with a wine tasting.

Join us for a wine tasting in honor of Charles Darwin, scientist extraordinaire. We’ll follow his journey on the HMS Beagle, in which his observations on plants, animals, rocks, and people proved indispensable to his views on natural selection and evolutionary theory.

The Beagle, with Darwin aboard, predominantly traveled along the coast of South America – and famously to the Galapagos Islands – but also made stops in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and the Canary Islands.

Wine Tasting: Au Naturel

Natural wine… what’s the fuss?

“Natural wines” are still gaining in popularity, as more and more people are exposed to them. Despite their increased exposure, there is still confusion about what, exactly, they are.

Join the Wining Archaeologist for a tasting of Natural Wines. Find out what they are, what they are not, what is controversial about “natural”, and, most importantly, whether you like them!

Oh, and the *wines* are natural – clothing is required!

Wine Tasting: Border Crossings

Wines and Changing Borders

Are the people, themselves, the true terroir?

Borders can be pretty arbitrary, as the changing geopolitial-world is constantly demonstrating.

But, while the name, politicians, and language may change, “place” does not. People are the constant tie to the land, maintaining and preserving underlying traditions and cultures – and sense of place.

Come taste 5 wines from lands with historically-contested borders:

  • Marjan Simčič, Goriška Brda Pinot Grigio (2015)
  • Meinklang Somlo Foam Pet Nat Biodynamic (2016)
  • Kuentz-Bas, Alsace Pinot Noir (2013)
  • Alpha Estate, Xinomavro (2015)
  • Jean Louis Tribouley Cotes Catalanes Orchis Vieilles Vignes (2014)

(wines are subject to change due to PLCB availability)

Wine Tasting: the “other” Tuscany

Tuscany – from Scansano to San Gimignano

Well, I like Chianti, but there is a whole other world of wines inside of Tuscany!

We’ll travel from San Gimignano (which lets me talk about the Guelphs! and the Ghibellines!), to Grosetto and the Maremma. What is there? Great wine, to be sure (Morellino di Scansano! Montecucco!), but also Etruscans, Romans, and Medici – oh my!

This tasting will be led by Jill Weber, Jet’s owner and our Wining Archaeologist.  Let her guide you through 5 wines and their unique histories.  This is a new year, so we have a new tasting series: Time-Traveler Tastings! Our tastings will transport you to the past as we dig deep into the history of the wine, the region, and the people who make it. Each class features 5 wines that we taste while discovering the fun facts and peculiar histories of each wine’s locale.
