Join us in celebrating Philadelphia’s designation as a World Heritage City, which it achieved in 2015!
Philly is the site of UNESCO recognized Independence Hall, the setting for the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution, and the original home of the Liberty Bell! Increasingly, Philly is also the home of some great wine, including from Mural City Cellars. Their CSW Rosé is made with all-hybrid varietals grown in Pennsylvania and vinified in Philly.
Madrid – there are four UNESCO sites involved in Madrid’s World Heritage status, including the home town of Miguel de Cervantes: Alcalaá de Henares. Wine-making in Madrid predates Cervantes by more than a millennium. The wines are not as well known as the famous author, but this Zestos Garnacha comes from old vines at high altitude and lives in sandy and granitic soils – all the preparation for delicious wine – which, according to Cervantes, is half the battle!
Vienna’s historic center, which dates from the medieval period, is its UNESCO site. Wiener Gemischter Satz is *the* wine of Vienna. What is it? Perhaps best described as “Vienna Mixed Jawn”, these are wines made from vineyards that are co-planted with at least 3 different varietals. Those different varietals are then harvested and vinified together!
Rome is the home of the UNESCO site of Vatican City, the home of the Popes. Wines of Rome’s Frascati designation were once popular with “ordinary” Romans during the Republic and the Empire, but came to be the wine of Popes and Kings. Principe Pallavicini – whose family included Pope Clement IX – has owned this property for over 300 years and still makes incredible Frascati wine.
