Wine Tasting: Border Crossings

Wines and Changing Borders

Are the people, themselves, the true terroir?

Borders can be pretty arbitrary, as the changing geopolitial-world is constantly demonstrating.

But, while the name, politicians, and language may change, “place” does not. People are the constant tie to the land, maintaining and preserving underlying traditions and cultures – and sense of place.

Come taste 5 wines from lands with historically-contested borders:

  • Marjan Simčič, Goriška Brda Pinot Grigio (2015)
  • Meinklang Somlo Foam Pet Nat Biodynamic (2016)
  • Kuentz-Bas, Alsace Pinot Noir (2013)
  • Alpha Estate, Xinomavro (2015)
  • Jean Louis Tribouley Cotes Catalanes Orchis Vieilles Vignes (2014)

Old World Vs. New World Wine Tasting Series: Italy Vs. United States

Join Nick in the lounge for this series that highlights the differences between Old World and New World wines. “Old World” doesn’t mean stuffy, but refers to the classic wine-growing regions of Europe, like France, Spain, and Italy. “New World” refers to younger wine-growing regions outside Europe, including the United States, South America, South Africa, and Australia.

This tasting will compare wines from Italy (Old World) with counterparts from the States (New World)

What really makes these wines different from each other – even when the same grapes varieties are used – are their varying climates and production styles.  The best way to understand this difference is to taste them side by side, and that’s just what we’ll do! As a bonus, we’ll have a light food-pairing for each set.

We will be tasting 6 wines in total, side by side and you get to be the judge as we decide the winner of Old World v. New World.

Seating is limited

*You must be 21 or over to participate

Wine Tasting: the “other” Tuscany

Tuscany – from Scansano to San Gimignano

Well, I like Chianti, but there is a whole other world of wines inside of Tuscany!

We’ll travel from San Gimignano (which lets me talk about the Guelphs! and the Ghibellines!), to Grosetto and the Maremma. What is there? Great wine, to be sure (Morellino di Scansano! Montecucco!), but also Etruscans, Romans, and Medici – oh my!

This tasting will be led by Jill Weber, Jet’s owner and our Wining Archaeologist.  Let her guide you through 5 wines and their unique histories.  This is a new year, so we have a new tasting series: Time-Traveler Tastings! Our tastings will transport you to the past as we dig deep into the history of the wine, the region, and the people who make it. Each class features 5 wines that we taste while discovering the fun facts and peculiar histories of each wine’s locale.

BONUS: A limited quantity of these bottles will be available for sale to-go!

Wine Tasting: exploits of Attila the Hun

Attila the Hun!

Attila was king of the Huns from 434-453 AD and ruled over a pretty large empire between that of the Romans (to the West) and Byzantium (to the East). He was feared throughout the land, but was he a masterful militarian and astute diplomat?  Or just a rapacious brigand?

Let’s find out! We’ll visit his home in the Hungarian Plains (sampling from Somlo) and the start of his Balkan rampage in Moesia (Serbian wine!). We’ll also join his foray into Pannonia (and the Niederösterreich vineyards), past Aquilaeia (to Lombardy!), and towards Aurelianum (with a stop in Reims for some champagne…).

We’ll sample these five wines:

  • Champagne Dom Caudron Epicurienne Vielles Vignes Meunier France NV
  • Fekete Juhfark Somlo Hungary 2011
  • Stift Klosterneuberg St Laurent Austria 2013
  • Vino Budimir Triada Serbia 2008
  • Martilde Bonarda DOC Lombardy Italy 2013

This tasting will be led by Jill Weber, Jet’s owner and our Wining Archaeologist.  Let her guide you through 5 wines, exploring culture and landmarks along the way.

This tasting is part of our Global Vineyard Passport Series. Your $30 ticket entitles you to our 5-wine tasting plus light snacks, as well as 15% off your evening’s bar tab.
